Africa-Morocco
MOROCCO, the valleys on the southern face of the Atlas Mountains and the Fint Oasis
and
Ascent of Toubkal (optional extension)
8 days + 3 days optional extension to the summit of Toubkal
Itinerant stay. Moderate level hike. 4 to 6 hours of hiking per day. Elevation gain of 400 to 700 meters per day.
In the southern part of the High Atlas Mountains, vast valleys and canyons, known as wadis in Morocco, have been sculpted by the erosion of water flowing from the towering peaks that rise to over 4,000 meters. This water irrigates beautiful date palm groves that grace the Piedmont region and once sustained (and still do) the Berber shepherds of these mountains. Our routes explore three of these great valleys: Mgoun, Dades, and Taugdha. We will also hike around the hidden oasis of Fint and its striking contrasts.
Encounters with nomads, varied and scenic routes, and rich Moroccan cuisine will make this stay a great introduction to the charms of the Atlas region.
For those who wish, at the end of the stay there will be a 3-day extension to climb the highest peak in Morocco, Djebel Toubkal (4,167 m).
