La Palma: the flowering of the Roque, a spectacle of nature.
La Palma—the beautiful island—like the rest of the Canary Islands, is of volcanic origin. Despite this, its rich vegetation and the many contrasts in its landscapes set it apart from its more arid neighbors. In late May and early June, the island's highest peaks experience an explosion of color: many plant species bloom simultaneously, offering a magnificent spectacle, most notably the pink tajinaste, with its spectacular inflorescence reaching up to three meters in height
Hiking its coastal trails, reaching the peaks that exceed 2000 m, or descending among the lush vegetation of the giant laurel forest will allow us to discover a true paradise of hiking and nature.

FROM BARLOVENTO TO LOS GALLEGOS. THE FORGOTTEN VILLAGES OF THE NORTH OF THE ISLAND.
First, you come into contact with the rugged landscapes of the north and its groves of dragon trees, the sacred tree of the Guanches, the ancient and mysterious inhabitants of the island.
Small villages perched high on the cliffs and separated by ravines, with surprising vegetation, are linked by an old bridle path, a remnant of a not-so-distant time when there were no roads on this forgotten side of the island. The vegetation reminds us that we are close to the tropics.
Walk out of the hotel and return by private bus.
3h15 walking time - 170m ascent and 375m descent

THE VOLCANO CRESTS AND THE PEAK OF ROQUE DE LOS MUCHACHOS.
The entire northern half of La Palma is dominated by the imposing Caldera de Taburiente crater, one of the largest in the world. A national park since 1954, its rugged and spectacular topography lends itself to numerous hikes. Today we'll traverse its ridge to the island's highest point, El Roque de los Muchachos, at 2,426 meters, where the view is divided between the caldera floor to the south and the telescopes of El Roque, the leading stargazing complex in the entire Northern Hemisphere. We'll also enjoy the spectacle of the pink tajinaste flowers in bloom, along with many other plants such as the summit violet, the broom, and many more.
3h30 walking time - 350m ascent and 80m descent

THE LAUREL FOREST AND THE NORTHERN CANYONS. THE WATER AND FAGUNDO RAVINES
After a bus transfer we arrived at the municipality of Garafía, in the north of the island, perhaps the wildest part of La Palma.
Our walk begins through a typical La Palma rainforest known as a Laurisilva. The path descends beneath the dense, green canopy of laurel branches at a height of over 20 meters: this is the path that follows the Barranco del Agua ravine and leads us to the village of Don Pedro.
Here the landscape changes dramatically, leaving behind the giant laurel trees and entering the realm of euphorbias, agaves, and dragon trees—the sacred trees of the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands. Descending the Fagundo Ravine, we reach a wild cove accessible only on foot, and finally, we climb up to the village of El Tablado. The transformation of landscapes is the highlight of the day, from the verdant forest to the arid world of the coast and its ancient dragon trees.
5 hours of walking, 960 m descent and 380 m ascent.
Hotel change. Night in Los Cancajos, beachfront accommodation.

WHEN VOLCANOES SPEAK. THE TENEGUÍA AND THE SAN ANTONIO.
Far to the south, the landscapes are stripped of vegetation, and lava flows remind us of the last eruptions of Teneguía. In 1971, the people of the nearest village, Fuencaliente, felt the earth tremble, and Roque Teneguía spewed enormous quantities of molten rock that, from its 438 meters of altitude, reached the sea... The smell of sulfur still lingers on the mountain.
After a bus transfer, we set off on foot from the volcano's information center and, after a short climb, reached the summit of San Antonio to admire a view that opens up to the sea. Descending from San Antonio, the trail leads us towards Teneguía. Ochre and black hues alternate, and the smell of sulfur immerses us in the volcanic atmosphere. After Teneguía, we descend towards the deep blue expanse that surrounds the southern tip and the salt flats.
The small beach next to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse is the end point of the walk, but the pleasure can be prolonged with a good swim in the warm waters of the Atlantic.
3h15 walking time - 100m ascent and 660m descent
-
FORESTS AND RIVERS IN ONE OF THE LARGEST VOLCANIC CALDERAS ON THE PLANET. DESCENT OF THE BARRANCO DE LAS ANGUSTIAS.
We'll leave the cars in the Los Llanos parking lot and take a taxi up to the Los Brecitos viewpoint, over 1000 meters above sea level. The hike allows us to discover the impressive Caldera de Taburiente crater from within. The landscape will feature rocky spires covered in Canary Island pines, high ridges shrouded in clouds, mountain streams, and gorges with their yellow or crystal-clear rivers—the only rivers in the Canary Islands!
A breathtaking descent that often leads us to the riverbed and opens the door to the beautiful La Caldera National Park. Swimming in the river is possible.
5 hours of walking. 1000 m descent and 200 m ascent.
-
THE VOLCANO ROUTE. A SPECTACLE OF CRATERS ON ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HIKES IN THE CANARY ISLANDS.
A must-do hike in the Canary Islands. A beautiful route that begins at the Refugio del Pilar mountain refuge and, as it climbs to the 1,954-meter-highest point in southern La Palma, reveals stunning, entirely volcanic landscapes. On a clear day, the views of the east and west coasts are magnificent, and on the horizon, Tenerife and El Hierro appear like two mirages through the trade winds.
5 hours of walking. 600m ascent and 900m descent.
-
